On Being and Becoming: The Quiet Work of Character

This reflection explores the relationship between writing, character, and authenticity. It begins with a question about impact, not measured by visibility or engagement, but by quiet moments of connection that are often unseen. From there, it moves into the kind of inner qualities that shape how we show up in the world, especially when life is demanding or uncertain.

At the heart of the piece is a gentle tension between honesty and discernment. Authenticity is named as essential, but not as something unfiltered or indiscriminate. Instead, it is framed as a practice shaped by values such as integrity, kindness, and care for both self and others.

This post is part of the On Being and Becoming series, a collection of reflections on presence, growth, and the ongoing work of becoming who we are beneath the surface. You can read the full piece on Substack.

~ Haide

I acknowledge that my work takes place on the traditional, unceded, and ancestral territories of the Stó:lō people — including the q̓ic̓əy̓ (Katzie), qw̓ɑ:nƛ̓ə̓n̓ (Kwantlen), Mathxwí (Matsqui), Semá:th (Sumas), Leq’á:mel, and Semiahmoo First Nations — and I am grateful to live and work on these lands.
