When Stories Create Possibility

When you think of stories, what comes to mind?

A childhood book that carried you somewhere new?

A friend who can make an ordinary event sound like an adventure?

Stories shape us.

They connect, teach, and sometimes even heal.

Lately, I’ve been reflecting on the ways stories create possibility — the possibility of understanding, empathy, and change.

In my work, I have the privilege of hearing people’s stories every day.

Some are light, some are heavy, but each one holds something sacred.

Listening reminds me again and again that no person is just one story — and that being heard can be deeply healing.

John A. Powell puts it beautifully:

“When people’s stories are recognized, it does something — it creates a possibility.”

When we make space to listen — really listen — something shifts.

Our assumptions soften.

Our compassion grows.

And the distance between us begins to close.

That’s what I explore in this week’s episode of my podcast, Encouragement Along the Journey:

I’d love to hear what story has shaped your understanding lately.

I acknowledge that my work takes place on the traditional, unceded, and ancestral territories of the Stó:lō people — including the q̓ic̓əy̓ (Katzie), qw̓ɑ:nƛ̓ə̓n̓ (Kwantlen), Mathxwí (Matsqui), Semá:th (Sumas), Leq’á:mel, and Semiahmoo First Nations — and I am grateful to live and work on these lands.
