Seen by AI, Known by a Human

Where reflection meets relationship

I recently asked AI a simple but vulnerable question: Who do you think I am?

The response was thoughtful, even affirming. It reflected qualities I value: presence, depth, and authenticity. But what made the experience meaningful wasn’t the AI’s words. It was what happened next.

I read the response to my partner - someone who has known me for over three decades and who I trust to be honest, even when it’s hard. When he said, “That sounds pretty accurate,” the reflection landed differently. It became real.

This experience helped me see AI not as a source of truth, but as a tool—one that can prompt reflection but cannot replace relationship.

In the end, being seen by a machine was interesting.

Being known by a human was what mattered.

I acknowledge that my work takes place on the traditional, unceded, and ancestral territories of the Stó:lō people — including the q̓ic̓əy̓ (Katzie), qw̓ɑ:nƛ̓ə̓n̓ (Kwantlen), Mathxwí (Matsqui), Semá:th (Sumas), Leq’á:mel, and Semiahmoo First Nations — and I am grateful to live and work on these lands.
