It only took a few words to break him — and one adult to change everything.0
This reflection begins with a moment many parents know too well: the day a child comes home wounded by words. At nine years old, my son encountered bullying in a place that had become a source of joy, challenge, and growth. What followed was heartbreak, courage, and a response that quietly reshaped his experience of safety, dignity, and belonging.
As Pink Shirt Day approaches - a worldwide movement centered on inclusivity, advocacy, kindness, and standing against bullying - this story feels especially timely. It reminds us that bullying thrives in silence, but healing begins when someone speaks. When one adult chooses to intervene, to name harm, and to protect a child’s dignity, the impact can echo for years.
This piece reflects on the power of language, the vulnerability of children, and the responsibility adults carry to create spaces where kindness is not optional, but foundational. It is a story about how words shape identity, and how courageous presence can restore what cruelty threatens to take.
If you believe that children deserve safety, that kindness is strength, and that adult voices matter more than we sometimes realize, I invite you to read the full piece on Substack.
